The Skateboard England (virtual) National Championships goes ahead

This weekend Skateboard England will host the first ever virtual National Championships, with skateboarders in the country battling for a podium position from the comfort of their home.

On the weekend in which Manchester was set to host the UK’s Olympic qualifying skateboard event, it will now be replaced with a virtual variation of the competition, with skateboarders being invited to self-film a trick from their home and submit it online.

Unlike the standard judging format, the winner will be crowned after receiving the highest number of votes from the skateboarding public via social media channels using the hashtag #virtualnationalchamps

The original event was due to take place at Graystone Action Sports Academy, Manchester, but had to be postponed due to the current Coronavirus pandemic and comes in the week it was announced that the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games would be postponed up to the Summer of 2021.

James Hope-Gill, CEO at Skateboard England and Skateboard GB said ‘During the current circumstances we want to celebrate the amazing skateboard talent we have here in the UK and give skateboarders an opportunity to compete, as well as helping us to deliver key messages about staying at home and being active during this difficult time. ‘Although the skateboarders won’t actually receive Olympic qualifying points in the competition, there will be a bit of prize money, it will inspire people to stay active at home and will be a bit of fun’.

The winners will be announced on Sunday at 5pm on the Skateboard England social media channels.
