Skateboard England National Championship 2020 Announced

Skateboard England today (17/01/2020) announced that the skateboarding National Championship will be held at Graystone Action Sports Academy in Manchester on 28-29 March 2020.

The 2-day event will be one of the most important events in the skateboarding calendar and will form one of a series of Olympic qualifying events on the lead up to the summer games in Tokyo 2020, with skateboarders competing for qualification points and cash prizes.

Graystone Skatepark was chosen to host the champs for the second time after receiving a number of high quality submissions from skateparks around the country. Ben Livingstone, Graystone co-founder said “We are truly grateful to have been given the opportunity to host the National Championships in such a crucial year for skateboarding, not only in the UK, but across the world”.

The competition will be formed of 2 disciplines: Street and Park. The street competitions entail skateboarders doing tricks on various ledges, rails, stairs and ramps (which resemble urban architecture). The Park competitions takes place in a skatepark bowl, which replicates an empty swimming pool, with athletes performing tricks out the top of the pool and on the coping surrounding it. There will be male and female events for both competitions, with equal prize money for each.

In the last National Championship (held in April 2019), over 100 of the best UK skateboarders competed, including the five Skateboard GB Aspiration funded athletes, with Joe Hinson, Matt Beer, Sky Brown and Helena Long taking the victory for their events.

Skateboard England CEO, James Hope-Gill said: “We are really excited to be hosting the National Championships in an Olympic year. It’s set to be one of the biggest skateboarding competitions in 2020.”
